Trekking Prohibited in Tangmarg Forest Areas; Police Warn of Legal Action

Police Issue Advisory, Impose Restrictions on Trekking in Tangmarg Forest Areas

Srinagar, December 29 (GNS):

In the interest of public safety and to avoid any security-related misunderstandings, Baramulla Police on Monday issued a detailed advisory imposing strict restrictions on trekking activities in the forest areas of Tangmarg, particularly in the upper reaches.

According to an official handout issued to GNS, the advisory follows an unauthorized trekking incident reported in the Danwas forest area on December 21. The incident prompted the police to reassess safety protocols in view of prevailing weather conditions, terrain challenges, and security sensitivities in higher forest zones.

Police clarified that with immediate effect, local residents intending to enter upper forest reaches must obtain requisite permissions from the concerned local authorities. In addition, they are required to inform the nearest police station or local administration prior to entering such areas. The move, police said, is aimed at ensuring proper coordination and avoiding unnecessary alarm or emergency situations.

The advisory further states that non-local tourists are strictly prohibited from entering or undertaking trekking activities in upper forest areas under any circumstances. Authorities cited safety concerns, difficult weather conditions, and the risk of misidentification in sensitive zones as key reasons behind the prohibition.

Baramulla Police has appealed to the general public, trekkers, and tour operators to strictly adhere to the issued guidelines. “Public cooperation is essential to maintain a secure environment and to prevent untoward incidents,” the statement read.

Police warned that violation of the advisory may invite strict legal action as per law. Residents and visitors have been advised to stay updated through official communication channels and avoid venturing into restricted forest areas.
